What to expect during treatment

Needles and Moxa comprise the acupuncturist's tool kit. All needles used in our clinic are pre-sterilized, single-use, and are disposed of safely.

They are made of the highest quality solid, stainless steel, and are the width of two human hairs. Acupuncturists adjust the flow of Qi energy within a person by stimulating particular acupuncture points along the acupuncture meridians (pathways through which the Qi flows) by inserting the needles just below the surface of the skin. Sensations vary from person to person, but one may experience a dull ache or tingling sensation that dissipates after a few moments. Moxa is a dried herb in the mugwort family that warms and nourishes the acupuncture point prior to needle stimulation.

Treatments usually last 45 minutes to an hour. An initial visit is typically longer in order to establish a basis for diagnosis and treatment. A series of six weekly treatments is scheduled along with the initial visit. At the end of that time, both the patient and the practitioner will evaluate how the acupuncture is progressing and determine what further treatments are indicated. Because changes can be gradual, it is helpful to wait until after these first treatments to understand if the acupuncture is "working." During an acupuncture treatment diagnosis relies, in part, on the pulses. There are twelve pulses, six on each wrist, that relate to the condition of each of the body elements and organ systems in the body. Treatment follows diagnosis in each session and promotes the harmonious flow of the body's Qi.
